A new video from the Medi-Cal Incentives to Quit Smoking (MIQS) Project demonstrates how providers can share with their patients about smoking cessation

In this brief video, "How to Talk to Your Patients About Quitting Smoking: A New Video for Health Providers" Steve Schroeder, M.D., UCSF Professor of Medicine and Director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center, discusses the importance of asking, advising and referring smokers to the California Smokers’ Helpline. Dean Schillinger, M.D., Chief, Division of Internal Medicine, San Francisco General Hospital, provides a brief demonstration of how to talk to a patient in less than three minutes about quitting smoking.

The MIQS Project offers free nicotine replacement patches and a $20 gift card bonus to Medi-Cal members who call the California Smokers’ Helpline at 1-800-NO-BUTTS and enroll in counseling support services. To receive the incentives, the patient must be a current Medi-Cal member, have a Beneficiary Identification Card number, and complete the first counseling session. Some conditions apply. For more information on MIQS, visit the new MIQS web page at www.nobutts.org/miqs and the member page at www.nobutts.org/medi-cal.
